St. Michael Prayer

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do, thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell satan and all of the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Glory to God in the Highest!

'Tis the Month of Our Lady...

Do you remember singing this song at a
May Crowning?

I do.

Refrain:
All Hail! to thee, dear Mary,
the guardian of our way;
To the fairest of all Queens,
Be the fairest of seasons, sweet May.

Refrain

In grade school, we all, and by all I mean, all 6th grade girls,
wanted to crown Our Lady at the annual May Crowning.

We knew she was our Mother.
We knew she loved us.
We knew that if we offered our prayers to her, she would take them to Jesus for us.
We had a great devotion to her.
In April, our devotion soared to new levels.

We walked with our rosaries out at lunch and recited the rosary so the good sisters would see us.
We would ask the nuns if we could stay after school to help them or help a student who was
"struggling" with their studies.
We asked if we could dust the altar at church,
and
we all joined the Junior Altar Society.

Oh, they were on to us, those nuns.
They heard us singing softly in the halls,
and not so softly as we walked past the principal's office,
" 'Tis the month of our Mother."
There was only one chance at this,
and
we were giving it our
ALL.
 We had waited 6 years for this honor,
and
we were all determined.
 It was an honor to be chosen.

I remember the day when our classmate was chosen.
We, who thought we were so clever,
were stunned.

She was not "in" with the "in crowd."
She was not a popular girl.
Not many of us had noticed her this year.
She was quiet.
When she talked, she talked funny.
She had joined the Junior Altar Society when she had transferred to our school, and
she had to be told over and over what to do.
Her parents weren't rich.
She didn't have sleep overs.
None of us thought she was fun.
She didn't get in trouble.
She didn't complain.
She had weird eyes.

Her name was announced over the loud speaker by our principal.
There was an audible gasp in the room.
No had ever dreamed...
but her name was called.
We all looked at each other,
then we looked at her.
"Not fair," someone whispered.

She didn't say anything,
then, we saw something.
She was crying soft, gentle tears.

We sat there shamed.

Sister looked at all of us,
then she invited Maria to come to the front of the room.
Maria was still weeping.
We politely applauded her victory.

The bell rang, and it was time to go home.
Stunned, we filed out of the room in silence, for a change.
No one knew what to say.
There was a mistake made, there had to be.
Maria wasn't popular.
Maria was the wrong choice.

I was picking up my book bag when Sister Bernadette called me back into the room.
Maria was sitting at her desk.
"I'm going to call your mother, shortly.  Will you tell her that when you get home?"
Boy, I knew I was in trouble now.
"You and Maria are about the same size, aren't you?"
I nodded.
"Maria doesn't have a dress to wear for the May Crowning tomorrow.  Do you think you would be willing to lend her one to wear?"
"I guess," I said not too happily. "Maybe she could use my shoes, too."
Sister Mary Bernadette, just smiled.
"That would be very kind of you."
Maria finally smiled.  She was out the door now.
Her eyes were so weird.  How could they have picked her?

Sister Bernadette spoke to me again.
"You're better than this.  Maria's family is very poor.  I'm pleased that you are willing to help her out."
I was still pouting.
"What's wrong with her eyes?" I asked.
 Maria has a condition called Downs Syndrome.
"What does that mean?"
Sister replied, "It means she has a very difficult time learning.  If she wasn't in school, she'd be in an institution."
"Oh," I said.
"She was the right choice this year."
"I don't think so."
Sister sighed.

"Yes, she was.  She's so happy.  She probably won't be able to go on in school.  She just can't learn.  We're trying to teach her how to clean houses and cook at the convent.  I'll bet you didn't know that."
"Why are you doing that?" I asked.

"Because one day she will need a place to live.  Her mom is trying to find a good place for her to live before she dies.  Her mother has cancer.  She won't live much longer."

I was still pouting, but Sister Bernadette had my interest now.

Sister Bernadette reminded me, "Are you going to confession on Saturday?"
"I don't know."
"Look up the term 'selfishness' in the dictionary.  Ask yourself if it applies to you."
"Is it a sin?"
"Yes."
"OK"
I wanted to go home.

"Will you do me a favor?"
"I guess."
"Will you pray the Rosary so that Maria is able to crown Mary tomorrow without the kids making fun of her?"
I hesitated.
Sister said, "This is the only time in her life when she will be able to do this."
"All right."
"Thank you.  Now, you can go home.  Be kind to her, please.  Your mother told me to call when we needed something like this."
"I'll tell her."

Sister Bernadette called my Mom, and Maria's Dad brought her over to try on the dress.
I cringed.  It was my most beautiful dress, ever!
I really wanted to crown Mary!

I had to admit that Maria looked beautiful in that blue dress.
I found my First Communion veil in the closet.
"Can we add this?" I asked.
Mom asked me, "Do you mind if I make some changes to it, so it will look like a beautiful veil instead of a first communion veil?"
No, I really didn't.

We said the  Rosary that night as a family.  We all offered the Rosary up so the kids wouldn't be mean to Maria tomorrow.

There was a happy ending, of sorts.
There were still some girls who were mean to Maria.
One of them called her a "retard" as Maria waited in the back of the church.  I wanted to sock her in the nose, but
I saw Mother Mary's face.  I saw her kind eyes.  I couldn't.

I grabbed Maria's hand, and Sister said I could wait with her in the back of the Church.
It became my job to tell her when to walk down the aisle to crown Mary.
 The music started.  I told Maria to start walking down the aisle.
She smiled at me.  She was halfway down the aisle, when she stopped.
I thought, "Oh, no!  She doesn't know what to do."

Maria turned around and walked back to me.
She grabbed my hand and pulled me down the aisle with her.
I was terrified.
I looked at Sister who just smiled.
The girl who carried the crown was waiting quietly at the statue of Mary.
Maria and I walked together down the aisle.
I saw Maria's mother in the front of the church, in a wheel chair.  She was smiling so hard that I thought her face would break.
Maria kept pulling me down the aisle with her.

When we got to the statue of Mary, Maria climbed on the stepping stool so that she would be able to reach the top of the Virgin's head.  She held my hand firmly.
The other girl brought the crown to Maria.  Maria took the crown of flowers with one hand and pulled me up on the stepping stool with her.  She put my hand on the other side of the crown,
and together, we crowned the Queen.

Now, it was my turn to cry.

Many years later, my mother told me that there were many parents who called the school and were upset about Maria crowning Mary.
She told me that they were even more upset that I had helped her.
I guess Sister Mary Mathias, our principal,  had tried to placate the parents, but no one was happy.

That summer, a lot of my friends changed schools.  Some went to public schools.  Some went to private schools.
Most of them didn't come back.

I didn't have many friends, but I had some. All of the other girls had things to do when I called.   I didn't care.  They had been so mean to Maria, it didn't matter to me.

I went to the convent and asked about Maria.  She was happy to see me.
She had a job already.  She was helping the sisters cook and clean.  Her mother had died two weeks after the May Crowning.  Maria's dad told Mom, that in her last hours she prayed for me because I was so kind to Maria.

I didn't know what to say.

I walked by the park after I saw Maria.  There were so many snapdragons blooming, I decided that no one would miss a few.

I picked a small bouquet, and sprinted to Church.  I didn't have a chapel veil, so I snuck in very quietly.  No one was there.  I only had my ribbon, so I tied the flowers into a bundle with the ribbon.
I put them at the feet of Our Lady.
I thanked her for sending Maria into my life.  I was glad Maria had a place to call home now.
Sister Bernadette told me later, that they were going to make Maria a nun so that she would always have a home.  Maria understood enough of our faith for that to happen.

I smiled.  Maria was okay, and so was I.
So, was I.

Worth Repeating:: Spiritually Adopt a Priest

Our priests need prayers.  Priests are challenged as satan seeks to tempt them and devour their souls. They are the first line of attack that satan wages on our church.  He knows that without our priests, we have no sacraments.  We have no Eucharist.   Evil seeks to destroy our church.  Without priests, we have no church.  They are the roots of the vine that Jesus planted when he chose Peter as our first Pope and the apostles as our first priests.  Without prayer, priests are unarmed in a world of sin.  We need to pray for our priests!

I offer this suggestion when praying for priests.  Adopt a priest for a year or for a life time.  Pray for that priest.  Pray for him as if he were one of your family, one of your children.  Gather together as a family and pray a rosary for your priest.  When you cannot gather together, pray for this priest yourself.  Offer three Hail Mary's a day for him.  He is one of our Mother's beloved sons.  Offer up your sufferings for him.  Pray for his strength.  Pray that he have a burning love for souls.  Pray that he be given energy when he's tired.  Pray for him to see Jesus in every soul.

Spiritually adopt a priest you know, or, perhaps one you don't know.  There are always missionary priests to be adopted.  There are parish priests in other parts of the world who could use your prayer support.  Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your choice.  Feel free to adopt more than one priest.  When you do find a priest to adopt, you can choose to tell this priest or not.  I chose to tell my priest that I adopted him.  He was happy to know this.

Offer your Masses for him.  Have masses said for him.  Ask the Blessed Mother to stand by his side.  Pray for the gift of a happy death for him.  Pray for him to persevere even in danger.  Write his name down in your family bible.  Praise God for the gift of your priest.  Thank God for that gift.  Burn a candle for your adopted priest.  Sing songs of praise to God for him.

No matter how you choose to handle it, pray everyday for your priest.  Hold him close to your heart.  You will be blessed.

Always remember to pray for our Pope, too.  Our beloved Francis needs our prayers, too.  Adopt him along with your priest and pray for him daily.  Pray! Pray! Pray!  God will protect and strengthen our priests.

Sweetest Lord, and Loving Jesus.
We thank you for the gift of Father _____________________ who is our spiritually adopted priest.  We ask that you bless and protect him.  We ask that you give him strength in difficult times.  We ask you to cover him with Your most precious Blood.  We ask that You anoint him with Your love and with your peace.  We ask that you send Your angels to protect him as he ministers to his flock.  We ask that you protect him from evil.  We ask that you give him energy when he must go on.  We ask that you give him rest when he needs it.  More than anything else, we ask that you give him the gift of a rich prayer life so that he may draw closer to You, our Father, to Your Son Jesus, our brother,  and be filled with the light and gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Light of Heaven, we thank You for your blessings.  Bless Father _______________________.  Amen.

Where is God When You Need Him?

 I've often wondered, Lord, where You are.  I know we can't see You or hear You or feel Your touch, but it would be nice to really know You are there.  We struggle each day, and life is not getting easier.  Our Church is challenged. Christians around the world are being persecuted.  Right now, there's a lady here in adoration with us.  I don't like her at all.  I've asked if You could convince her to attend adoration at another time, but she still comes at this time.  That makes my life more difficult.  I need to confess my irritation with her and with You now.
Where are You, Lord?

 I see you are still irritated with Me.
Why are you behaving this way?  Did you forget that I AM God.

Be still and know that I AM God.
I know what I AM doing.  I know that you don't see it right now, but I love all my children in a way that only I can love.

I love this woman who prays with you as much as I love you.  I know that she irritates you.  Perhaps by practicing the virtues of humility and patience you will find her less irritating.
If you haven't figured it out yet, she is put there so that you will grow closer to me.  You must overcome your pride and learn to discern My Will for you.
You've said, "I'm here to do Your Will, Lord," but you continue to try to convince Me to do your will and not My Will."
That's pride.  satan fell because of his pride.  Is this what you want?
The world is unbalanced because of sin, and pride is one of the great sins that causes this imbalance.

People want to die on their own terms.
People don't want the old or disabled in their midst.
Mothers and fathers abort their babies.
They want to control their world and become who I AM.
If they think this world is as good as it gets, then their hope is lost.
They don't know better.  They need faith.  They need hope.  They need love.
You must learn to die to yourself.  Make room for me.  I will fill you with my graces, but I need room to grow.
Sin leaves little room for me.

Join yourself to Me in prayer.

Be still.

If you are still, you can hear me when I whisper in your ear.
Listen to the sounds around you.  Sometimes, they drown Me out.

Be still and grow in trust.

So many of my beloved children have suffered martyrdom.  They gave everything for Me.
My children who are martyred are with me now.  Join with Me and pray for all of my children, especially those who persecute Me.
I AM with all of them.  They see Me when they die.  Those who were martyred, see and feel the love of God.  They gave their all for Me.
I held their hands as they felt the knife or the bullets pierce their bodies, as I felt the nails in My hands and feet.
Never doubt this.  I AM with them.

Those who murder my children, if they don't repent, then, at death, their fate is grim.
Pray for them.

The  persecutions will end, but you must pray.  You were put on earth for a reason.  You are part of the imbalance now.  You must pray more and sin less.

  In many ways, you remind me of Peter.  It took awhile for him to catch on, and he did have the advantage of being with Me daily for 3 years.  He made the choice to give his all for Me.  He learned.  I AM hopeful that you will learn as well.

Trust Me.

Stop whining.

I'm only giving you that which you can handle.

Pick up your cross and follow Me.

Pray more.

I want to hear from You.  Of course, I know you inside out.  That doesn't matter.

You. Are. Mine.

I want you to reach out to me in humility, in obedience, in love.

Listen for Me.

I know, you're ready to go now.

Think.  Pray.  Be ready.

I love you!

Oh, she will be here next week.  If nothing else, offer it up!

I Guess We Need to Forgive Ourselves and Pray...

Public Domain
I saw something, at Mass yesterday, that lead to the desecration of a Host.  I was sitting at the side of the altar during Communion.  As a lector at Mass, after we receive the Eucharist, we wait on the side of the altar so as not to distract others when it’s time to read the announcements.

I happened to notice a mother with 3 young girls coming up to the Eucharistic Minister to receive Holy Communion.  The elder two girls appeared to be old enough to receive.    The younger girl clearly was not old enough to receive.  The mother was the fourth in the line to receive.  All of the children were given the Eucharist.  The mother received, as well.  The two elder girls were waving the Sacred Host around as they walked back to their pew.

There was no sense of reverence or knowledge of what they had been given in their hands.
I watched from the side of the altar to see if they consumed the hosts.  I couldn’t tell, but I decided I would check their pew after Mass.  The distributor of the Sacred Blood had pulled the chalice close to her so as not to give the children the Most Precious Blood of Jesus.

I’m not blaming the children or the mother.  Clearly, the children didn’t know about the Eucharist.  According to an usher, the children had been very disruptive during Mass.  I don’t know about that.  I didn’t see.  I’m not judging.  Perhaps the mother had just wanted to make sure the children attended church today.  Perhaps, she was not Catholic.  I don’t know.  Only God knows what was in the mother’s heart.  The problem was that after Mass, we found a consecrated host on the floor.  It had been smashed to pieces.   We notified our pastor, and he came and cleaned up the sacred remains of Jesus on the floor.

I regret that I did not leave my place on the altar and talk with the girls and their mother in order to recover the hosts.
I regret that I allowed this desecration to happen because I did nothing.

“Oh, My Jesus, forgive us our sins.  Save us from the fires of hell.  Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy Mercy.“

I know that God will forgive me in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
I know that if I ever see the same people who were involved, I will do something about it, with love.
They didn’t understand.  I know that.  However, it was tragic that the desecration of the Sacred Host happened at all.

I know that God will bring good out of this for everyone.

I forgive all involved.
I forgive the girls and their mother.
I forgive me for my inaction.
Praise to You, Lord, Jesus Christ!

I would ask that you pray for all who were involved in this desecration.

Hail, Holy Queen!

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

At the End of the Day, At the End of the Week, At all Times, Give Thanks to God!

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
1 Thessalonians 5:18

I'm giving thanks to God this week because:

1) Flowers are blooming again.  It takes a long time to see this after a Minnesota winter!
Thank You, Heavenly Father!

2) I mowed the lawn for the first time this season!  I love to mow the lawn, and if the lawn needs mowing, spring or summer is here!
Thank You, Heavenly Father!

3) The yogurt is fermenting!  I hope to have fresh yogurt tomorrow!
Thank You, Heavenly Father!

There is always a reason to give thanks!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the God of praises,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the guardian of Israel,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who formed all things,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the redeemer of Israel,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who gathers the dispersed of Israel,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who rebuilt his city and his sanctuary,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who makes a horn to sprout for the house of David,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who has chosen the sons of Zadok to be priests,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the shield of Abraham,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the rock of Isaac,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the mighty one of Jacob,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to him who has chosen Zion,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the King of the kings of kings,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

He has raised up a horn for his people,
    praise for all his loyal ones.

For the children of Israel, the people close to him.
    Praise the Lord!
Sirach 51:12
